Dear reader,
"A period of learning or teaching"
With just six more weeks to go in 2020 it is time to start looking back at the year. It is time to ask a few questions. You still have time to do the things you wanted to achieve this year or get a head start on 2021. This has been a year that not one of us had expected. It has been a year where old dreams have died and new dreams of old times came back to us. It has been a year where literally everything in the world has changed for good now. It is time to look back at the lessons that 2020 has taught us.
In the upcoming blogs there will more reflection on this year. So I will start early and keep the change in topics during the weeks that come. This week I am going to look at the lessons that 2020 has taught me. I am going to look at what I have learned from the lessons and how I turned the lessons out into a success. For me my goals, dreams and desires where way different than what my intentions where in the beginning of the year.
Lessons of 2020:
Every day I try to learn something new, maybe it is from a book or it is a skill. Sometimes I learn something that turns out positive and other times it turns out not as expected. The same goes for 2020, with a fresh new decade a head of us to start working on our dreams and goals. On one moment these dream and goals go a way in a blink of an eye because of a terrible virus. There is nothing you can do but to watch it take over the world. For the lessons of 2020 I am going to talk about four different areas where I have learned the most lessons from and I am going to share how I turned the lesson into my success. There are many more lessons but these are the diving once of the year.
- Embrace reality and deal with it:
This is a lesson what I have learned from the book Principles, by Ray Dalio. He explains that there is nothing you can do to change the reality of what is happening. He also mentions that you need to understand, accept and work with reality as it is not as you wish it were. That is very much true for this year. With the world going in lock down, economic and financial crashes and your life changing forever, you can accept this reality and make it the best possible and not turn it into a depression that you wished things would have been better or back to normal.
This lesson has been very important for me, once I realized some of my goals and dreams for the year have been wiped out I went back to the drawing board to see what I can changes to make that reality happen or make a new dream or goal that would be better suited for the situation that I am in. There was nothing I could change on a lock down and my work closing down. So let's take this situation and make it an opportunity to do something new or different.
- Personal development:
During this year it is good to see what you are made of. How strong you are able to be alone, in a relationship or even living and working with children around you all day. You will learn a lot about yourself or the others you live with. It is a great opportunity to create great habits that will benefit you in the long run. Also you can use this time to learn new things about yourself or test yourself to see what you are really made of.
For this lesson I have given myself challenges during the lock down months. I was looking at different habit that I have and which habits I want to acquire or which ones I can better live with out. So I did the challenges of not drinking for 90 days, no fap and having a vegan month. There where more challenges that I had to see if I can make small changes that would benefit me on a daily basis. My goal is always to become a better version of myself. If there are small changes that can help on a daily basis then it would help with my development.
- Investing opportunity:
A few times a year the stock market will have a correction and you are able to buy stocks that are down maybe 10 to 15% if you are lucky. In March we had a major correction with stocks tumbling down 30 to 40% in just a few weeks. On one side you have people fleeing the market because everything is coming down. On the other side you have people who see the opportunity to buy stocks at a discount price. For this crash no industry or market has been saved. Just the big tech names and some new video conferencing companies made great money because of the lock down. The rest had to come down.
While most people where buying toilet paper and preparing for a doomsday scenario there are a few people that are able to profit from it. I did not run out and stock up on extra food or toilet paper, I did not buy liabilities. I bought assets, stocks are 40% off. Within six months the majority is back to levels before the lock down and some are even back to 52 week highs. As an investor you have to have cash a side and you wait for this opportunity. While everyone is distracted you get the bargain stocks.
- Learn something new:
It is always a good time to learn. Now when we have no place to go but our own house it is a great time to learn something new. Whether it has been something that we always wanted to learn or it is a completely new subject we have the time to develop our self. This can be very small from learning a new language to learning how to trade stocks. What ever you are interested in or you want to do, now is the time to start it from the comfort of your own house.
I am always ready to learn something new. During this time I have learned more about painting and I have been painting the entire restaurant at my work. Also now I am learning how to build a website. What ever you learn it can come in handy in the future. Because you have another experience you are able to more and more self sufficient. This lock down made me wiser then I was before.
There are many more different lessons that I have learned. Some are smaller and have a small impact or can be linked to these major lessons. The point I want to make with the lessons from 2020 is that what ever happens you are able to adjust to the situation. That whatever happens you are able to learn something new or profit from the situation that we are in at the moment. This should also be a blueprint for the next time something major like this happens. You are able to keep going without being effected on any way.
My inspiration for writing this blog came from Patrick Bet David from Valuetainment. I believe that if you don't become richer, wiser or with a skill out of a lock down you have not been using your time wisely. We all have one commodity that we can not buy and that is time. Use it wisely and to your success. Within the world of time you can win a lot or give it up and it would be gone forever.
Thank you for reading and see you next week.
