Dear reader,
"A compound present in the body as a neurotransmitter and a precursor of other substances including adrenaline"
Being on this journey in life and reading and listening to interesting people all over the world you gain insights in different areas. Whether it is politics, sports, science or any thing you can imagine. While doing my research and study on No Fap, (see week 28) I came across on interview with Daniel Lieberman with Valuetaiment. The topic was: Dopamine gets you addicted to porn, politics, sex and drugs. After reading his book Molecule of more I have learned so much more there is to know about this single chemical.
This week I am diving in the brain, I am going to look at dopamine as the chemical and neurotransmitter, I am going to look at dopamine and addictions and finally I am going to look in to how you can use dopamine to gain success or to use dopamine for success. At the end of the blog I will leave a link to the interview and a link to the book. If this is a subject you are interested in then it is must watch for you!!
The pleasure molecule:
Dopamine is also known as the pleasure molecule. The point of dopamine is to reach more. Just like drugs you can take one hit and then you want another one. Or with soda, you take a sip until you reach that high, well the next sips won't deliver the same result as the first one. That is what dopamine does. Dopamine is the the chemical that is here and now. It doesn't care about the future or the past. It want's the instant pleasure now and it want's it fast.
Dopamine is often related to drugs and alcohol. That is because these are substances of different chemicals that give you hit after hit. People that are addicted to drugs and to alcohol are very similar, often because they are addicted to one it becomes easier for them to become addicted to the other as well. This happens because your brain wants more and more.
Dopamine and addictions:
Not only drugs and alcohol are factors that are addictive and that have influence on our dopamine system. There are many more addictions now a days that have influence on our dopamine and that have control over your life. These include social media, such as Facebook and Instagram. These are platforms that are made to be addictive. They want you to keep scrolling because you are going to miss out and you want to gain a "social status" with likes, comments and amount of followers.
One of the most developing addictions that has major influence because of the producers and suppliers know how to keep you addicted is porn. Over the years the porn industry has been growing with free to watch movies in any fantasy that you wish to fulfill. Just like drugs and alcohol with porn you want to have more more. You start of with tame stuff and you progress to harder and crazier acts. (See week 28: No Fap for more about porn and addiction.) People are willing to risk there life, relationships and other things they have just because they are watching porn. Soon you will have people going to therapy because there porn addiction has taken over there life.
Dopamine and success:
Everyone is wired differently, because this is the case the amount of dopamine you have in your brain differs from your partner, family and colleague. Some people are high in dopamine and this means that they are triggered easy by new and interesting things around them. Being high or low in dopamine is not good are bad and you can't naturally increase or decrease the amount of dopamine you produce. With specific conditions there are medicine that can either increase your dopamine or decrease your dopamine. One of these conditions is a bipolar disorder where people are very low in dopamine and are often depressed.
Dopamine is rewarding when you have reached your desired success. It gives you the motivation and energy to go after the success what you wish to require. When you have higher amounts of dopamine you tend to work harder for your goal. When you have lower amounts of dopamine you tend to take the easy route and you are satisfied with the smaller reward. You need to know what triggers your dopamine, are you addicted to working or watching movies. What is the reward that would trigger you to get out and follow your goals?
This is an interesting subject and there is so much more to dopamine and how it can affect you negative or positive. There are also much more subjects to cover such as politics, science and entertainment that can be triggers on your dopamine and that have influences on the choices you make. This is a short blog about it and I think I would get back to this subject some time soon again.
Thank you for reading, feel free to leave a comment and see you next week!!
