Dear reader,
It has become part of our society. There are many different types and forms of it. I am talking about social media. Almost every person has one or more apps with social media on their phone. The world has become ever so connected that you can share, message, video and voice call to and from any part of the world. Do you want to see a video of a cat? With just a few clicks you can find what ever you want to see.
Social media has a lot of influence on our daily life. We go to bed with it and we wake up with it. It shows us the news and everything that is interesting for you as a individual. It is near to perfect to show you exactly what you wish and desire to see even before you have opened the app. Today I am going to share with you why I am using less social media and what the benefits are for me.
Addictive:
In a lot of studies there has been shown a similarity to the usage of social media compared to the most addictive drug cocaine. With the test panel similar parts of the brain light up whenever the user is consuming the content compared to a person addicted to cocaine. Also there have been a lot of studies that have looked at the dopamine level that arrises when a user is consuming the content. In both scenarios the results have shown that constant usage of social media is addictive.
Because we have so many different platforms and the most people are active on one or more platforms each day most people don't even know how much they are using the apps. Every hour for a few minutes counts to a lot of hours in a day where you are just consuming. Think of it like this, every time you open a social media app and you need to take a shot of vodka, you would be drunk before lunch time.
What I do?:
About nearly 2,5 years ago I quit Facebook, the dopamine spark has worn out and I was done with it. It was the best thing I ever did and I felt so much better with out it. I was just consuming content. I was scrolling down and I asked myself a few questions. What message stood out to me? Have I gotten any knowledge from it? Do I feel any better after seeing all the content? All the answers where no. So I decided to quit. I would stop using Facebook, I have taken my account offline and haven't been on the platform ever since.
The same I did with Instagram not to long ago. I was just consuming the content just like on Facebook. Again I asked myself the same questions and the answers where yet again no. The only thing I using Instagram for is to share my new blog. I only allow myself to use Instagram to post my new blog right after writing. In no any other condition may I use the platform for my entertainment.
What can you do?:
Do you want to quit using social media or be more productive and spend less time on the apps? I have got some tips and tricks. For Iphone users when you are on you home screen and you slide to the left you can see your screen time. This is an amazing function where you can see how often you use your phone and for what. You can see the present day or when you tap it you are able to see your past week.
You can add limits to specific app so that it tells you maybe you should something else or you have spend enough time on your phone. The best and most effective way to stop using social media is to just delete the apps. But when you think it is to hard or you want to allow your self to use it then when you search for Iphone storage you can choose to offload the app. This means the app will be available for you when you tap it but it remains offline.
(Unfortunately I have no experience with android phones but I think similar features are available to those phones.)
I hope you learned something about social media and why I choose to use my time in the actual world. Social media does wonderful things and brings people together. But use it like and tool and don't be used like a tool.
Thank you for reading and see you next week.
