Dear reader,
A while ago I had a coffee with my father and we where having a father son conversation. After a while we where talking about principles and rules. He made a great statement, rules are for your first part of your life to know where the boundary is. Principles are for your adult life and this is where you live by.
A principle is a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior for a chain of reasoning. Rules are mend to be broken, principles are a way of living, thinking or executing. Principles are very important these days and needs to be used effective to guide you on your journey.
Ray Dalio:
Ray Dalio is the king of principles. In his book Principles, he explains how he has build his relationships and company with just the key ingredient of principles. His book is divided into two parts, life principles and work principles. For everyone principles for life are different, just as are all the principles for work, because every company is different to. In his book he describes five principles. These are very direct and true. But once you embrace them it will make your life so much easier.

Life Principles:
1: Embrace reality and deal with it.
It sounds so simple but we are wired to charge every idea and opinion. Also we can't always embrace the reality. We would like to change it or adapt it to our own interest. But if you are able to do this it makes your life so much easier and with a lot less stress.
2: Use the 5 step process to get what you want out of life.
1, Have clear goals, 2, Identify and don't tollerate the probelms in your way, 3, Diagnose the problems to get at their root causes, 4, Design plans that will get you around them, 5, Do what's necessary to push these designs through to results.
3: Be radically openminded.
Listen to what other people have to say. They may not always be right neither would you. Together you are stronger than by your self. Often people are there to help you. So sometimes accept the help and you will get so much better from it.
4: Understand that people are wired differently.
This is a very important one, people often forget that other people don't see or understand what they do. This can lead to challenges and possible misunderstandings in relationships.
5: Learn how to make decisions effectively.
Having principles and applying them during the decision making process is very effective to create the best outcome for your decisions. In his book he explains a step by step process to help you to make better decisions.
Work principles:
Your work is a whole other life than your private life. Wether you own a company or you are an employee. You see that no two companies are the same. Once the internet companies came up such as Google and Facebook gone where the suits and in came the t-shirts and jeans. A whole new era of ethics and principles have arrived. Unfortunately this doesn't work for every company. You can't be a banker and go the bank in a t-shirt and jeans.
For the work principles Ray uses three main principles and they are divided in smaller bits and pieces.
1: Get the culture right.
Having a culture is very important. A culture doesn't only define you as company but it also let's people make mistakes and learn from them. Having a good culture comes with great trust, transparency and honesty.
2: Get the people right.
The WHO is more important than the WHAT. People are connected to people. They have an emotional connection that has influence on where they do their business. So having the right people is often the most important factor. You get the right people by hiring right, train, test and evaluate the people that work for you.
3: Build and evolve your machine.
Once you have founded the foundation you have to fine tune it until you get the maximum efficiency. Only the fine tuning never stops. The world keeps on evolving and you need to keep up with every change that occurs during this process.
My principles:
This book has helped me a lot to think about my own life, work and my future company. It has showed me insights that you can create a company based on principles and values. Within my job there are a lot of principles we work by. And for my personal life I use the principles laid out by Ray Dalio. Your principles can change during your life time. It is important to understand them and to be able to have an open communication with the people you share them with.
I highly recommend reading the book. It is a very useful guide in your private and work life. Wether you are starting a family or starting a business.
Thank you for reading and see you next week.
