Dear reader,
What is mindfulness? It is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something. What we do when we are mindful is that we pay true attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them. The beauty of mindfulness is that there is no right or wrong. There is no one specific way to practice mindfulness. You just have to understand the technique and it can do wonders for you.
I have been reading and learning about meditation and mindfulness for a while now. I also have a mind that never shuts up and keeps going. Only when I am in specific states like sleeping or meditating I have the true power of controlling my thoughts and being able to quite my mind for a small period of time. Being able to learn more about meditation and mindfulness has been a powerful lesson in my life.
Why mindfulness?
We have about 60.000 different thoughts in one day. This includes thinking, remembering, focusing and having actual thoughts. For most of the thoughts that pop up in our mind we have no control. They jump up like the game wack a mole. Because we have so many thoughts it drains us out during the day and we need to refuel our battery once and a while. Our different thoughts control out emotions and how we feel during the day.
Mindfulness is very powerful and it can help us to control our thoughts and emotions. It can change the course of our emotions by letting the focus disappear from the emotion to the emptiness within our thoughts. By practicing mindfulness we can change how we feel during the day and once we feel out of control or we feel upset or down we can simply by a short meditation and breathing exercise change our focus to make us feel positive and better to continue the day.
How to meditate?
There are different ways to meditate. The first and most important thing to know that there is no wrong way, no specific amount of time required or special moment during the day to meditate. It is all up to what ever feels good and right for you and the moment you are in. By meditating you are focusing on having no thoughts pop up in your head. You do this by feeling the awareness of your breathing.
The way to meditate is breathe in deeply and exhale fully. That is all what it is about. By focusing on your breathing you will start to recognize that your thoughts will slow down. They won't change as fast nor will they pop up like I mentioned earlier. Once you realize that thoughts are popping up in your mind again focus back to your breathing. By repeating the process over and over that is what is meditation.
What I have learned from mediation:
During the last year I have been learning and practicing mindfulness and meditation. There are a lot of different apps that guide you from your first meditation to being able to practice it on a daily basis. I have tried many of the different apps but I have not be consistent enough in the past to use them as a tool. Also after a period they will charge you for the sessions. During this search I found, The Honest Guys on Youtube. They provide all different types of meditations. From guided mediations to affirmations (I will get to this in a latter blog).
I have had some experience with different types of recreational drugs in pas but no drug has been as powerful as meditation. Being able to do an mediation of an hour or longer feels so great that I can't even explain it.
For one of my habit goals I want to try to meditate for 90 days straight. Every evening before I go to bed I take the time to listen to a guide mediation. The meditation is for about 12 minutes and sometimes I go longer and sometimes I can't concentrate and stop whenever my mind has had enough. I am on day 20 now and after the first few minutes it often feels great. In upcoming posts I will share my results of meditating for 90 days and some more of my changing habits.
If you have any questions about meditation please leave them in the comments below and I will get back to you.
Thank you for reading.
