Dear reader,
From a young age we all get asked the same question, what do you want to be when you grow up?
For everyone the answer is different. Just like that every person is different. We all have different interests and we get our energy from different things.
For most of our early years we go to school to get the best education that will lead us into a direction in life. Often during the course of our life things change, just like our interest and network. So then you need to ask your self on an early age is school the right choice for me?
My experience and school:
After high school I did not know what I wanted to do or what I wanted to be. I enjoyed working with people. I went on to a junior college where I did International Business Studies and was able to look at some different aspects in the business world. Some parts of the course where more interesting than others. But once I finished the junior college I was still struggling with the question what I wanted to do or what I wanted to be. So I decided to do the same course on a college level. After not to long and a lot of stress and struggle I decided to quit school. I needed some time to figure out what I wanted to do.
My parents where very supportive. They showed me that it is never to late to go to school and you should always keep studying. My father got his masters degree when he was around 55 years old and my mother when she was 63 years old. They have always been a great example to me that you should enjoy it and your time and possibilities will eventually come.
Now I am 28 years old, I haven't gone to school in over 4 years. But I am studying. Last year alone I read about 15 books, some twice and some of them I have studied. My goal for this year is to read 20 book follow this pattern up every year. The biggest difference is that I am studying and reading topics that I enjoy, that can bring me more joy and fulfillment. There is a saying: What you read today will influence who you will be in 5 years.
Our education system:
'21st century kids are being taught by 20th century adults using 19th century curriculum and techniques on an 18th century calendar!' School is made for workers, for employees. Robert Kysiosake says "The A-students work for the C-students". This is true for all works in live. You are not allowed to asks for help during test and we are all graded on the same line. While everyone is wired differently often school fails people instead of that people are failing school.
The reason I say school fails people instead of that people are failing school is because we are all different and all need a different way of learning. Just the difference between extroverts and introverts. In the book Quite by Susan Cain she went to Harvard Business school and couldn't find hardly and introverts. This because you have to participate in specific things. Some people are visual learner while others like to practice.
I don't have any intension on tearing down the school system. There some areas where there is room for improvement. We need to have some subjects in our school system that will make the world a better place. We need some form of personal development class, where you will learn that people are wired differently and how to deal and work with different people. We need a class on personal finance. Where you learn how to save, invest and pay taxes. Once you learn valuable life lessons you will be able to gain much more experience. You will understand people better and you will be able to work in a much better flow to gain a better understanding.
Thank you for reading and see you next week.
